Starting next week, Google Photos is rolling out a new feature that discloses when an image has been edited with its AI-powered tools, such as Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, and Zoom Enhance. While this is a step forward in transparency, many users are raising questions about how easily identifiable these AI-edited photos really are.

New AI Editing Disclosures in Google Photos

When you access a photo in Google Photos, you’ll soon notice a new tag at the bottom of the “Details” section. This tag will inform users if a photo has been “Edited with Google AI.” The addition comes after Google faced criticism for not making it obvious when a photo had been altered using its powerful AI tools.

Google claims that this new label is part of its broader mission to improve transparency in the use of AI editing. However, despite this change, photos shared across various platforms — from social media to text messages — won’t have any immediate, visible watermark in the frame itself, leaving some concerns about the clarity of these disclosures.

Why the Lack of Visual Watermarks?

The absence of visual watermarks within the image frame means that unless someone dives into the metadata or checks the details tab in Google Photos, they won’t know if a picture has been edited using AI. This has been a point of contention for many users and privacy advocates, as AI-edited images can be misleading, especially when viewed outside the Google Photos app.

Although metadata and the details tab will flag AI-edited content, the reality is that most people simply scroll through their feed without investigating further. In response to these concerns, Google has hinted at the possibility of flagging AI images directly in Google Search by the end of this year, similar to what Meta is doing on Facebook and Instagram.

A Step Towards Transparency, but Not a Solution

Google’s new disclosures cover not only generative AI features like Magic Editor but also non-generative tools such as Best Take and Add Me, which combine multiple photos into a single image. While these photos will be marked as edited, the tag won’t appear in the Details section, raising further concerns about how obvious these changes will be to the average viewer.

Despite the new tags, the lack of a simple, at-a-glance solution continues to fuel the debate over the responsibility tech giants have in addressing the rise of synthetic content. Visual watermarks, while a potential fix, can easily be cropped out or edited, which leads to further complications in enforcing transparency.
